Polished Consensus Is Boring

The best moment of any panel is when the panellists disagree.

I was on the “LLM Council” at the London Tech Leaders Engineering Summit, a panel of AI experts taking live questions from the room. Mal Minhas compèred, alongside Bhagya Reddy, Ben Maynard and Santiago Castro, and there were no pre-set questions. The audience submitted whatever they wanted through the event app and we answered on the spot.

Somewhere in the middle we got onto Waterfall, and Ben and I did not agree at all. That turned out to be the best part of the session. A room full of engineering leaders would rather watch people who know their stuff thrash out a real disagreement live, with no chance to tidy it up afterwards, than sit through a polished consensus. We were still arguing about it in the hallway once the panel had finished, and never did land in the same place.

That is the value of being in the room rather than reading the recap afterwards: the disagreement, unedited.

I am grateful to Ben and Bhagya for a brilliant discussion!
